South Melbourne Market is welcoming the traditional festive spirit in 2015, making customs, carols, children and charity the focus this season.
Santa’s Mail Box – Santa’s Mail Box is located in the Food Hall. Children can drop off their letters for Santa, and have them express-posted to the North Pole. Kids can bring their own letters from home, or write them on the Dear Santa notepads provided by Santa’s helpers.
Santa Pops In – Santa will be making an appearance, making three special stops at the Market on Sat 19, Tue 22 and Wed 23 December, 11am-1pm.
Kids Christmas Craft – Art and craft workshops for kids (5+) will be another highlight, with two-hour, fully supervised sessions being held on Tue 22 Dec and Wed 23 Dec in The Neff Market Kitchen. Children will learn to make traditional ornaments, cards, wreaths and baubles. Workshops are just $20 per child, with all materials supplied.
Christmas Gift Ideas – For market-goers struggling to find the perfect gifts, our stallholders have taken the hard work out of picking presents giving you their best Christmas finds for her, him, home and the kids. The guide will be available at the Market and on our website very soon!
Christmas Cooking Demonstrations – Adults will also have a chance to show off their festive flair, with Christmas cooking demonstrations held on Sat 12 & Sat 19 December in The Neff Market Kitchen. Learn how to make edible Christmas gifts like mince tarts, shortbread wreaths or side dishes for the big day including roast potatoes and glazing a ham. Classes are just $20 per person.
Sacred Heart Mission Gift Wrapping – Charity will not be forgotten this festive season, with the Market’s Christmas gift wrapping service raising much-needed funds for St Kilda’s Sacred Heart Mission. The dedicated wrapping station means people can get their gifts wrapped for a gold coin donation. Every Market day, throughout December, 10am-2pm.
Christmas Music – Lovers of carols and festive tunes will be in for a treat during the final Christmas countdown. The musical line-up includes the iconic Salvation Army Carol Singers and The Jazz Jokers.
Trader Decoration Competition – Decorations will be a big drawcard, with shoppers and stallholders up for big prizes in the Trader Decoration Competition. Tinsel-happy traders will compete for the “Best in Market” title, with great prizes up for grabs. Shoppers uploading photos of their favourite decorated stalls on Instagram using hashtag #southmelbournemarket could also win a $200 Market Voucher. The trader competition will be launched on Wed 25 November with the winners announced on Wed 9 December. The Instagram competition will launch on Wed 25 November with winners notified on Friday 18 December.
Turkey & Ham Buyer’s Guide – Our delicious hams include Barkly Grandmother ham, Peter Bouchier hams, Jonathan’s of Collingwood ham and Warby Farm rare breed, free range, nitrate free ham.
