Activation of the York Street facade of the South Melbourne Market has been identified in the Market’s Strategic Plan 2015-20 as a key strategic priority.
By opening up this north facing side of the Market and enhancing the streetscape and the community facilities it would attract new shoppers, enhance visibility and accessibility and enhance the Market’s distinctive features.
The first phase of this project is the Design Phase, and we would like to thank everyone who completed our online Have Your Say survey.
Have Your Say outcomes:
From 8 to 31 March, 2016 we asked the community to provide feedback on the South Melbourne Market York Street Activation project via the City of Port Phillip’s Have Your Say webpage.
We can now report that we made 437 community members aware of the York Street Project by reviewing the Have Your Say page, of this group 150 were more informed having viewed the information and downloaded the documents, and we had 72 participants complete our survey, with an additional 12 participants writing comments in the brainstormer section.
The survey results showed us that the community supports the improvement of the York Street side of the Market, and in particular Loving or Liking the idea of art space, entertainment, green walls, pocket parks, occasional food trucks, communal dining, public seating.
We received some great constructive feedback that has all been passed onto the designers appointed to the project to assist them to formulate a draft York Street Activation Masterplan.
This Masterplan will be on display here, and on the City of Port Phillip Have Your Say webpage when completed.
Thanks to everyone for sharing their feedback, and we look forward to getting your feedback on the draft Masterplan.
Once the draft masterplan is completed, the community will have a chance to review it and provide further comments to inform the design team for their final Masterplan to present to Council.
