Join a Boomerang Bag Sewing Bee

We have declared our own war on plastic bags as part of a move towards a greener, more sustainable future. South Melbourne Market has introduced a ban on single-use plastic bags .

Market shoppers are encouraged to BYO reusable bags, baskets or trolleys and traders no longer supply plastic shopping bags.

Customers who are unaware of the policy or who forget their own bags, can buy recyclable paper bags or reusable shopping bags at the Market, or can borrow a free, fabric Boomerang Bag.

This is where you come in!

If you love to sew and care about the environment, we’d love your help to join a Boomerang Bag sewing group and sew more bags for us:

  • To register for Port Melbourne Sewing Bees click here.
  • To register for Elwood Sewing Bees click here.

If you would prefer to sew from home, kits can be provided. Please email and we’ll put you in touch with a Boomerang Bags volunteer.

You can also donate reusable fabric bags and fabric at the Market Office (Centre Aisle). We’ll recycle the bags and transform the fabric into more Boomerang Bags.

Thank you for your interest and for your help in reducing single-use plastic at the Market.
