Thank you for all your support throughout 2018, it’s been another huge year and we’ve loved seeing our Market community grow!

Some things we have celebrated this year:

We welcomed a record 5.1 million people!

Special events such as the South Melbourne Night Market and Port Phillip Mussel & Jazz Festival achieved record attendances too.

A range of delicious and eclectic new stalls opened like Pieno di Grazia, Cannoleria, Frank’s Quality Fruit & Veg, La Central, The Fish Shoppe, South Melbourne Poultry and Aptus Oyster Bar.

On 11 April, the Market introduced a ban on single use plastic bags. This was a significant step for us in moving towards a greener, more sustainable future. We also introduced a complete ban on the sale and use of plastic straws on 1 December, with stallholders providing recyclable paper straws instead.

We welcomed the Queens Baton Relay in February as it made its way to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

We continue towards a greener, more sustainable future with the diversion of most of our organic waste and the production of two garden products from this waste – Market Magic vermicompost and South Melbourne Market Soil Food. In addition to this, we introduced our Shuck, Don’t Shuck oyster recycling project in February to help build and restore the lost shellfish reefs of Port Phillip Bay.
