Night Market

The Summer Night Market Season is here!

For the first time, South Melbourne Market will offer late night shopping with the return of its annual Night Market series. In addition to the traditional array of outdoor food trucks, entertainment and family fun, the 2020 event returns on a Wednesday, meaning you can shop ’til you drop, too!

Launching on January 8 and running for five weeks until February 5, the iconic Night Market had traditionally taken place on Thursday evenings. The move to Wednesdays will mean the whole Market is open for business. You can do your weekly grocery shop on your lunch break or after work, peruse the Market’s unique boutiques and then stay on to enjoy a fantastic meal and free entertainment.

To kick off the event, South Melbourne Market butchers will be battling it out in the ‘Great Sausage Cook Off’! Competing for the title of Best Market Snag, the Deli Aisle traders will take part in a barbecue battle on January 8 from 5.30pm. A panel of expert judges will be taste testing and awarding the winner on the day, with the public called upon to come down and cheer on their favourite!

The free live music program has been curated by singer/songwriter Emily Ulman, plus there will be roving entertainment, kids’ activities and free cooking demonstrations. The Neff Market Kitchen will also feature a school holiday cooking class program for kids aged five and over. Parents can drop the young ones and enjoy shopping in peace or a drink at the bar!

Well-known as a foodie’s paradise, visitors can enjoy regular South Melbourne Market favourites such as award-winning paella, pandan croissants, duck wonton tacos, ice-cream baklava and famous cannoli, alongside food options galore at the Market’s Food Hall and Cecil Street restaurant precinct.

South Melbourne Market Chair, Jo Plummer, says the change in format reflects the growing demand for extended trading hours from the local community, while also providing an opportunity to showcase the Market to first-time visitors.

“We understand that not everyone can get to the Market for their shopping during the week, and that weekends tend to be reserved for family and social outings. Trialling late-night shopping during our Night Market season will allow the local community to pop in after work for their fresh produce, gift shopping and groceries, while also showcasing what South Melbourne Market has to offer to event attendees,” she said.

The Market will open at 8am each Wednesday with Night Market festivities kicking off from noon each day. CLICK HERE to view the music line-up and see what’s on.
