To celebrate our 150th anniversary the Market commissioned three of Melbourne’s best street artists to create some murals around the Market, showcasing their interpretation of our huge milestone.

The mural of a Chinese man is located on the side wall of Fruits on Coventry, just inside the entrance to the Centre Aisle from Coventry Street. Coventry Street traders in the early 1900’s used to be predominantly Chinese as seen in the Market collections register for 1927. This mural reflects this history rich history.

The little girl’s father took a photo of her in her own little world eating a doughnut. He posted it on Instagram, and it won our #Photooftheweek one Sunday and gained more likes via Instagram than any other posts at that time. The image represents so many stories in our My Market Story campaign, where shoppers of all ages remember their trips to the Market as a child and recall the treats they used to get as a highlight of their visit. The Market represents delicious treats to so many people, a time to spoil yourself and get lost in a space that is old and new and magical.

After WWII, a large wave of Greek migration occurred and South Melbourne became home for many migrants. This is a mural of ‘Jimmy’, one of the Greek men that has been frequenting the Food Hall for decades to catch up with mates and chat. This portrait is a tribute to the Greek heritage in the Market, particularly in our Deli Aisle where many of our traders are of Greek descent.
BAILER
Greenhouse 2017
Aerosol, acrylic
Bailer has created a garden of vines twining around the poles and sides of the walls, reaching up to a sun drenched sky. The contrasting green of the vines and their direction going upwards leads the eye to the warmth and glow of the ceiling, the hues typical of a bright sunset in South Melbourne. See the artist at work photos below.
KNOCK
Pollination 2017
Aerosol, acrylic
Knock has used the native Australian wattle as a focal point for this mural, which represents growth and bloom. The native wattle bird completes the plants cycle of pollination, that emphasises new growth. See the artist at work photos below.
