Winter Produce at the Market
Miniature pumpkins
They may be fiddly to cook with but we suggest using them as a decorative centerpiece for those winter dinner parties!
Custard apples
Custard apples, also known as sugar apples, have a creamy white flesh with a taste reminiscent of custard and pear.
Try a custard apple milkshake, blend custard apple pulp with milk, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a pinch of cinnamon for a velvety and indulgent libation. They're also beautiful enjoyed fresh on top of muesli or a warming bowl of porridge.
Feijoas
Feijoas, also known as pineapple guavas, are small green fruits with a unique flavor profile. They possess a sweet-tart taste reminiscent of guava, pineapple and mint.
Make a beautiful chutney by combining feijoas with onions, ginger, garlic, spices, and vinegar and cook low and slow in a sauce pan. It pairs wonderfully with cheese, roasted meats, or as a condiment for sandwiches.
Or try a modern take on the classic that is apple crumble and simply swap your apples out for, yes, you guessed it - feijoas!
Remember, feijoas are versatile, so feel free to experiment and incorporate them into your favorite recipes. Whether you enjoy them in sweet desserts, tangy salsas, or savory chutneys, these unique fruits are sure to add a delightful touch to your culinary creations.
Root vegetables
During the winter season, root vegetables shine as versatile and hearty ingredients that can be used in a variety of comforting and nutritious dishes.
Experiment with different combinations of root vegetables and flavours to create your own delicious winter recipes. Whether roasted or mashed, in soups, or in stews, root vegetables are a versatile and nutritious addition to your winter cooking repertoire.
We love laying thinly sliced root vegetables such as potatoes, turnips, and sweet potatoes in a baking dish with cream, cheese, and herbs. Bake until the vegetables are tender and the top is golden and bubbling. This indulgent dish is perfect for a cozy winter gathering.
Soursop
One of the more unusual winter finds at the Market is Soursop, with its spiky green skin and creamy white flesh, is a tropical fruit (but typically imported to Australia during the cooler months) with a subtly sweet and tangy flavour.
It's known to be nutrient rich, boast antioxidant properties and immune support.
Try adding a soursop smoothie into your morning routine by blending its flesh with coconut milk, banana and a touch of honey that will instantly transport you to warmer and sunnier days!
Or try a savoury soursop salsa by combining diced soursop with ingredients like red onions, jalapenos, coriander, lime juice, and a pinch of salt. This salsa pairs perfectly with grilled fish or chicken and also makes a delicious topping for tacos!
Persimmons
Persimmons are vibrant orange fruits with a mildly sweet and honey-like flavor. They can be enjoyed in various culinary creations.
Combine sliced persimmons with rocket, goat's cheese, candied walnuts, and a light citrus vinaigrette for a refreshing and colorful salad.
Or for a simple sweet treat halve or quarter ripe persimmons and roast them in the oven with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Bake until the fruit is tender and slightly caramelised. Serve with a dollop of vanilla ice cream or Greek yoghurt.
The Market has so many more exciting seasonal finds! We're open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am.
