From classic perfumed roses to Australian tropical natives...
Amongst the fruit and veg stalls on Coventry Street, you’ll find Michael Pavlou and his stall Azalea. He stocks a wide variety of stems including natives at unbelievable prices and loves making Melburnian’s homes brighter with a bunch of flowers.
Michael Pavlou, Melbourne’s floristry heir-apparent, has flowers in his blood. As a ten-year-old boy he got his start wrapping roses at his uncle’s florist. Michael has cultivated his passion and knowledge of the flower business from some of the industry’s best. He worked alongside his father, as he built his wholesale empire at the Melbourne Flower Markets, and he learnt everything from varietal names to styling arrangements from his step-mother Cherrie – the powerhouse behind the famous boutique Fitzroy-based florist Flowers Vasette.
Michael is passionate about Australian natives, warm climate varieties, tropical plants and flowers. He also has a soft spot for cut flowers, having been exposed to the best of the best at Flowers Vasette. He buys from his father and other flower wholesalers at the Flower Markets, meaning he’s up early. “I’ve learnt in life that the early bird catches the worm. Unless you’re at the markets early, you tend to miss new and unique floral offerings that come and go from the market daily.”
“I want my customers to look forward to coming and visiting us on Market days and seeing what unique varieties we’ve managed to source each week. From classics, such as perfumed garden roses and coral peonies, to exotic tropical blooms and our specialty Australian natives, I want to inspire people with nature’s diversity.”
