Getting to Know: Look at You

We sat down with Scarlet to learn more about the unique art of iris photography.

Look at You recently moved location and are now at stall 142 on Aisle F. We paid a visit to Scarlet, who is most often here at the Market, and she impressed us with the output of their camera and gave us a glimpse into the world of iris photography and its many applications.

The owners of Look at You brought the innovations of the business to Australia, after they came across the technology on travels in Germany. They realised that Australians would also appreciate the service, and the opportunity to see the idiosyncratic colours and patterns of their eyes up close. In fact, like fingerprints, no two irises in the world are the same, and this includes the left and the right on each person. When the iris is amplified to 200% with the macro camera, this uniqueness is made clear, visible in colour gradients, and what look like threads spun from electric texture.

A common reaction to the photo service is disbelief and sometimes people need to sit in the chair and see their eye on the screen to believe that the images are true photographs. Perhaps it’s in recognition of the sublime appearance of irises that Look at You choose to offer prints in styles respectively titled - galaxy, explosion, and bubbles- effects which fortify the abstraction of the iris when set against darkness, and which could be mistaken for scenes from outer space. The prints are interesting to look at in this aesthetic respect, and are often bought as artworks, but there are other reasons, symbolic, and sentimental in nature too.

Couples often buy images with their irises placed together, and families can choose a composition where each relative’s iris sits next to one another.

Products can be made in different sizes and forms, either as a wall print or an acrylic block, or alternatively, the digital file can be bought alone and used across devices, which is a good option for travellers. Regardless of the format, the photos show a high level of detail and it’s fun to interpret the distinct patterns among them. The photos are so captivating that most people who sit to have a free photo taken, choose to purchase the image or a print. The service makes a meaningful gift, and vouchers are another option, great for occasions like weddings and birthdays. It takes less than 20 minutes to have a photo taken, in a surprisingly easy process that showcases the magnificence of the technology. The final product is both tangible and experiential and pays artful homage to the curiosity that is each individual life.

Find Look at You in Stall 142 open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am.
