Update: 7.35am, Saturday 30 December
The Market's rooftop carpark will remain closed this morning while contractors complete the works to make the site safe for Market visitors. We will provide an update to all Market traders and our community as soon as it is opened.
Friday 29 December
South Melbourne Market is continuing to operate, including on New Year’s Eve, following an incident on the rooftop carpark earlier today.
The entire rooftop carpark was closed after a Market-goer lost control of their car and ran into two parked cars and a structural column. Crash barriers prevented further damage.
Market staff worked with Victoria Police to make the scene safe and a structural engineer has undertaken an assessment so repairs can get underway.
We are working to re-open the carpark as soon as possible.
An update will be provided here to let visitors know when the carpark can be accessed again. In the meantime, there is parking available in nearby streets and the Market is well-served by public transport, including the 96 tram.
